Ground Team

This unit is the core of LCSAR. All field personnel are assigned to this unit before going on to specialize in other areas of search and rescue. The Ground Unit provides professionally trained volunteers for ground search and rescue operations. All members obtain NASAR certification at the SARTECH II or higher level.

Typical Tasks of the Ground Unit:

  • Area Containment
  • Evidence Search
  • Navigation (Map & Compass, GPS)
  • Rapid Searches
  • Grid Searches
  • Rapid Intervention Team
  • Man Tracking/Sign Cutting
  • First Aid/Evacuation

K-9

The LCSAR K9 Unit provides qualified, volunteer canine teams who assist in saving the lives of missing people as well as assist in bringing closure to families who have a missing loved one.

Our handlers are volunteers who own their own dogs and pay for all of their related expenses out of pocket- to get a K9 to certification it can cost upwards of $5,000. Being a K9 handler requires a tremendous commitment of time and money yet which can yield great results.

LCSAR currently has K9’s that are nationally certified in trailing, area search, water search, crime scene, and human remain detection (HRD).

Search Management

The LCSAR Search Management Unit is fully comprised of members experienced in Search and Rescue Response, as well as receive extensive training in ICS and Search Management.

Among the required Training for members in this unit, in addition to that required of the ground team, includes:

  • Managing the Lost Person Incident (MLPI)
  • ICS 300
  • ICS 400
  • FEMA Forms of the IAP
  • Understanding of Lost Person Behavior and its application
  • SARTopo Mapping, as well as paper map use

LCSAR maintains a SAR Management Trailer that is self-supporting for use at incidents.

Mounted

The LCSAR Mounted Unit is fully comprised of volunteers who donate their horses and time to help protect our community. Each member not only provides their own horse, but also the cost of food, veterinarian services and transportation.

The Mounted Unit plays a large roll in our community outreach, in addition to the asset they can be for a Search and Rescue task. There are many benefits that horses can offer in a SAR response, but they also require some logistical planning. We are always happy to consult with your team as to horses as a resource in your SAR plan.

Our mounted members follow the NASAR Mounted SARTECH III requirements for their training.
