Training

All LCSAR applicants must pass a thorough background check through the Sheriff’s Department before advancing to an interview. The potential member is also asked to attend a monthly meeting or K9 training to make sure the team is a good fit for them. Once the background check is complete, a meeting visit is complete, and an interview panel has been conducted, an applicant may be offered a position as a probationary ground team member. That is when the hard work starts!

Within 90-days of acceptance, members must complete the following:

  • FEMA IS 5.a: An Introduction to Hazardous Materials
  • FEMA IS 100.c: An Introduction to the Incident Command System
  • FEMA IS 200.c: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
  • FEMA IS 700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
  • FEMA IS 800.d: National Response Framework, An Introduction

Within 1-year of acceptance, members then must complete the following:

  • CPR and Basic First Aid
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Bloodborne Pathogens (OSHA Approved Course)
  • Crime Scene Awareness
  • Land Navigation
  • HAZMAT Awareness (OSHA Approved Course)
  • NASAR SARTECH II Certification (to be maintained current)
  • HAM Radio Technician Level License (or higher)
  • K9 First Aid

Annually, members are required to complete annual skills refreshers which include:

  • Wilderness First Aid Skills
  • K9 First Aid
  • HAZMAT Awareness
  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Land Navigation (Day and night)
  • Work Capacity Test (aka Pack Test): 1.5 miles carrying 25 lbs.
